How Monero Works

Private money, explained like a human. No jargon, no PhD โ€” just the ideas that make Monero the one crypto nobody can spy on.

Most crypto is the opposite of private. Bitcoin and Ethereum are public ledgers โ€” every payment, who sent it, who got it, and exactly how much, is visible to anyone, forever. Monero flips that with three big ideas working together. Here they are. ๐Ÿ‘‡
The three pillars
Stealth Addresses
Nobody sees who you paid.

Your public address never actually appears on the blockchain. For every payment, the sender's wallet derives a brand-new, one-time address that only you can detect and spend from. So even though you hand out one address, no two payments to you can be linked together โ€” or back to you.

Like a PO box that spawns a fresh, single-use mailbox for every letter โ€” there's nothing to stake out.
Ring Signatures
Nobody sees which one was you.

When you spend, your real coin is signed alongside a group of decoy coins pulled from the chain. A verifier can confirm that someone in the ring authorized it โ€” and that it isn't double-spent โ€” but never which one was the real one. (The 2026 FCMP++ upgrade widened this from a small ring to effectively the entire blockchain as the decoy set.)

Like signing a petition along with a crowd of equally-plausible signers โ€” undeniably valid, but unattributable.
RingCT
Nobody sees how much.

Ring Confidential Transactions hide the amounts. The value is sealed in cryptographic commitments only the sender and receiver can read โ€” yet the network can still mathematically prove no coins were created from thin air. Sender, receiver, and amount: all hidden, all verifiable.

A sealed envelope only you two can open โ€” but the postman can still prove it's not counterfeit.
Three more things that matter
Dandelion++

Hides where a transaction came from. It takes a random, winding path through the network before "blooming" publicly โ€” so nobody can trace it back to your IP.

Tail Emission

A steady 0.6 XMR per block, forever. No hard cap. It guarantees miners always have a reason to keep the network secure โ€” and supply stays predictable.

Fungibility

Because no coin's history is visible, every XMR is identical and equal. No "tainted" coins, no blacklists, no coin worth less for where it's been.

Made for everyone

Monero is CPU-mined (RandomX) โ€” no warehouse of specialized machines. Anyone with a laptop can help secure it, keeping mining decentralized.

Put together: sender hidden, receiver hidden, amount hidden, origin hidden โ€” and still fully verifiable by anyone. That's not "crypto with a privacy mode." That's private money, by default.
